The League of European Research Universities, which groups 23 research-intensive universities in Europe, the UB being one of them, has recently presented the publication A Pathway towards Multidimensional Academic Careers - A LERU Framework for the Assessment of Researchers, which explains what the optimal assessment model for lecturers and researchers at universities should be like.

The report opts for making deep changes in the current assessment models to recognize the multidimensional character of academic careers. Therefore, it would include as assessment parameters leading and collaborative skills, and the context under which the researcherʼs academic career is carried out, among others.

At the moment, the assessment of the teaching and research staff is mainly based on teaching, research, transfer and management aspects. The new LERU publication presents a common framework so that the assessment processes recognize the diversity of profiles and contributions in order to guarantee the overall success of the institution in the fields of research, teaching and its commitment to society.

Specifically, it opts for adding three evaluation perspectives: the multidimensional —parameters to assess teaching, research and social impact activities—, developmental —leadership, collaboration or innovation management— and contextual —the personal and academic context of the person under assessment.

Assessment at the University of Barcelona

The change in the TRS assessment model is one of the objectives of the governing team of the University. In this sense, the University of Barcelona has joined the call promoted by the European Union to join a coalition of institutions that agreed on changing the current model of scientific assessment.

The UB is currently studying how to introduce some of these changes in the Academic Dedication Plan (ADP) and the examinations for teaching positions.

The LERU publication has been led by Professor Bert Overlaet, from the University of Leuven. The presentation of the document was carried out online, with an attendance of 350 people.
