The award ceremony for the first edition of the Antoni M. Badia i Margarit Prizes to the top doctoral thesis written in Catalan was held yesterday. These awards aim to promote the theses written in this language, and at the same time, award the research studies that consider sustainability, gender perspective and knowledge dissemination.

The following were the awardees in the different categories:

Top thesis in Catalan in the field of humanities and social scienes “Riure en vers: cap a una traducción poética dʼAristòfanes”, by Eloi Creus Sabater. The jury stresses its clear and understandable writing, with a concise, rich and elegant language.

Top thesis in Catalan in the field of experimental sciences and health sciences “Genètica i epigenètica de les addiccions i transtorns comòrbids”, by Laura Pineda i Cirera. The jury valued, on the one hand, the clarity of its writing and grammar correction, and on the other, the used methodology and the creativity. Also, they highlight that the obtained results of the thesis are validated by several publications in indexed journals.

Top thesis in Catalan with gender perspective “Art, curadoria i polítiques culturals dels feminismes: una anàlisi d ela Mostra FemArt (1992-2018)”, by Anna Fando Morell, which gathers the main problems that affect the feminist practises in the cultural sector.

Top action in Catalan on dissemination of the doctoral thesis (field of humanities and social sciences) “Masclisme i cultura jurídica. Una etnografía del procés judicial de la violencia de gènere”, by Caterina Canyelles i Gamundí, since it had an important media repercusión.

Top action in Catalan on dissemination of a doctoral thesis (field of experimental sciences and health sciences) “Dades etnobotàniques de Catalunya: metanàlisi i bioprospecció”, by Airy Gas Mas, for its originality and because it has a bearing on a scientific field which needs more dissemination.

The rector, Joan Guàrdia, presided the ceremony of these prizes called Antoni M. Badia i Margarit Prizes, paying tribute to the former rector of the University of Barcelona and a distinguished linguist. The ceremony included the participation of the vice-rector for Institutional Relations, Communication, and Language Policy, Jordi Matas; the vice-rector for Doctoral Studies and Trainee Research Staff, Maria Feliu; Xavier Badia, Antoni M. Badiaʼs son; and the poet and linguist Carles Duarte, who presented Epistolari Joan Coromines & Antoni Maria Badia Margarit.

Epistolary between two fundamental scientific personalities

The collection gathers 61 letters Joan Coromines and Antoni M. Badia sent to each other between the years 1948 and 1995, in which both linguists exchange opinions and comment on their scientific works. The epistolary “helps us to see, without prejudices, the nature of a friendship that put together two fundamental scientific personalities, generationally separated and also due to the Civil War, which prevented them from meeting in university classrooms and collaborating on shared projects, as both would have liked”, notes Duarte in the prologue of the book. “Joan Coromines (1905-1997) and Antoni M. Badia i Margarit (1920-2014) were not only eminent figures at the forefront of romanticism, but they also brought to our collective life the committed voices that firmly defended the Catalan language and culture and which defended, in an adverse context, democracy and freedom”, he continues. The book, coedited by Pere Coromines Foundation and the Institute of Catalan Language and Culture of the University of Girona, has been curated by Josep Ferrer and Joan Pujadas.
