The University of Barcelona has received today the first Ukrainian lecturers affected by the Russian invasion, who will work in this institution as visiting professors until December 31, 2022, when they regularize their employment situation in Spain. They are Oleksándr and Maryna Martynenko, whose family landed in Barcelona on Saturday after a long journey that started when they left Karkhiv on March 8 to reach Krakow, from where they fled to the Catalan city.

Olexándr Martynenko, professor of Medicine at the Kharkiv National University, joins the UB as a visiting professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Maryna Martynenko, professor of Economics at KNU, will join the Faculty of Economics and Business of the UB. Both came with their daughter Anastasia, student at the Kharkiv National University, and the parents of Maryna, Viktor and Nadiia, who are also university professors of mathematics and sociology, respectively.

The Martynenko family visited the Historical Building of the University of Barcelona, where they were welcomed by the vice-rector for Internationalization Policy, Raül Ramos. They went to the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, where they visited their new work space. They have been accompanied by the lecturer Xavier Pastor, from the Department of Surgery and Surgical Specializations of the UB, Martynenkoʼs colleague and the one who took the first steps to ease their departure from their country.

The vice-rector for Internationalization Policy, Raül Ramos, said this is the first step from a series of actions the UB is conducting to support the Ukrainian university community affected by the war conflict. The UB will soon publish all the details of this initiative.
