The University of Barcelona holds the first position in Spain in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), published today. The UB holds the 132nd position worldwide and the 48th position in Europe.

The University of Barcelona holds the first position in Spain in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), published today. The UB holds the 132nd position worldwide and the 48th position in Europe.

This ranking, which analyses 20,000 universities, ranks the UB among the 0.7% of the top universities worldwide. It uses indicators related to both teaching and research, around four fundamental aspects: education, measured by the number of former students who are awardees of international awards; alumniʼs employability, the number of former students who are now holding high positions in international big businesses; faculty, the quality of the teaching and research staff, measured according the number of staff awardees of international awards, and the results and performance of research. The UB stands out in the latter, in which it obtains the 68th position worldwide.

The Spanish universities to follow the UB in the CWUR ranking are the Autonomous University of Barcelona (184th position), the Complutense University of Madrid (247), the University of Valencia (284), and the Autonomous University of Madrid (285). At a global scale, the first positions of the ranking are held by Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Oxford.

Improvement of fifteen positions in the SCImago Institutions Rankings

The University of Barcelona has climbed 15 positions in the SCImago Institutions Rankings and it holds the 89th position worldwide among the higher education institutions. The UB holds again the first place in this ranking among the Spanish institutions.

The ranking assesses the performance of the research of more than 4,000 universities worldwide through different indicators based on the performance of research, innovation results and social impact. The UB stands out in the indicators related to research, where it obtains the 88th position worldwide compared its 94th position from last year, and in social impact too. The listing of universities carried out by this ranking enables the obtention of higher positions for those institutions in lower fringes, since the universities with the same score hold a single position in the ranking and this fact is not taken into account when establishing the following positions.

The SCImago Institutions Rankings includes institutions from different sectors: governmental and healthcare entities, universities, businesses and nonprofit organizations. The UB holds the 89th position among the universities, and in the overall group of the 8,000 analysed institutions, the 154th position (compared to its 186th from the last edition).

The Spanish universities following the UB in the ranking are the Complutense University of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, both in the 101 position, the Autonomous University of Madrid and the University of Valencia (both in the 170th position) and the University of Granada (188).

In this edition of the SCImago Institutions Rankings, the first position is held by Harvard University, followed by the Harvard Medical School, the Tsinghua University, Stanford University and the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
