UB-ZEISS Chair on Digital Imaging for Ophthalmology
The University of Barcelona and the technology enterprise on optics and optoelectronics ZEISS presented, yesterday, the new UB-ZEISS Chair on Digital Imaging for Ophthalmology in an event at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.
The chair aims to studying the different ophthalmic imaging techniques and their application in the early diagnosis and monitoring of different pathologies, designing digitalization models of ophthalmology through the development and practice of the FORUM platform and improving teaching in ocular imaging, with a special focus on the 3D image and microscope optical coherence tomography (OCT).
Resulting from this agreement, a minimum of three annual courses organized by the chair will be launched. These will include the presence of experts on the topic and the publication of a research study related to ocular surgery.
The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, noted that this chair “means substantial progress in ophthalmologic care”. “The field of medical imaging and technology is an opportunity for change that we wouldnʼt have imagined fifteen years ago”, he added. Guàrdia finished his speech saying there is no “better virtuous triangle than that built by the UB, Hospital Clínic and ZEISS”.
The director of the chair, Alfredo Adán, professor from the Department of Surgery and Surgical Specializations of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB, said that “joining forces helps us to launch projects which are beneficial for the citizens and the patients”. Nowadays, ophthalmology has current challenges for which image diagnosis is key: “Two of the objectives of the chair will be the digitalization to improve the interconnectivity between centres and the digital transformation of ophthalmology services to optimize our patientsʼ care”, said Adán. Last, the director of the chair noted that this journey, which starts today, will enable us to “improve the speed and precision of the diagnosis of some diseases, such as glaucoma and those affecting the retina, and it will detect diseases and ease clinical care optimizing the access to ophthalmic services”.
Then, Anita Sonnenfroh, CEO at ZEISS, stated that “innovation and excellence are part of the companyʼs DNA”. “Since its birth, 175 years ago, ZEISS has been in constant contact with the university field. Collaboration is fundamental to promote development and knowledge”, noted Sonnenfroh. “Supporting investment and research on the ophthalmic imaging associated with artificial intelligence and digitalization models is fundamental for the creation of new workflows that optimize and are more efficient”, she concluded.
