The University of Barcelona and the Official School of Nursing of Barcelona (COIB) presented yesterday the new UB COIB Nursing Chair in an event at the Chapel of the Historical Building of the UB.

The main aim of the chair is to promote research, training, dissemination and transfer in the field of nursing, and organize a series of social and cultural activities to give visibility to the contribution of nurses to public health.

The collaboration between both institutions aims to promote research projects on nursing related to the needs of citizens, promoting counselling for young graduates regarding research by creating awards to the top final projects of bachelorʼs and masterʼs degrees, and doctoral theses. It will also create dissemination activities on the nursesʼ contribution to peopleʼs health, among other areas. The call for a UB COIB Nursing Chair Award to scientific dissemination in nursing is another of the noted initiatives.

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, celebrated the creation of the new chair: “This is not one more chair, because it shows a strong commitment to public service by a professional school and a university. This is a great chance for the profession of nursing”, said Guàrdia, and he concluded: “Our Nursing School takes responsibility for going forward. We need more steps like this one”.

Then, the director of the chair, Marta Romero, tenure-track 2 lecturer and head at the Department of Fundamental Care and Medical-Surgical Nursing of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB, noted a chair is “an ideal tool” to alienate interests, in this case those of a university and a professional school, for the achievement of common goals. “This is the first chair on nursing in Catalonia and the second one in Spain. We are at a turning point for the profession”, said Romero. The director set as a main goal asserting the central role of nurses in citizen care.

The vice-president of COIB, Marina Romeu, noted that nursing “needs more public presence and more power in decision-making, as well as an improvement in the professionalsʼ work conditions”. “We need to provide this —she added— with scientific evidence and this is the reason this chair was created: it will bring the scientific rigour of the academia with the reality of the profession”, said Romeu.

The director of the Nursing School of the UB, Joan Maria Estrada, gave two important reasons to justify this chair: the importance of the UB in the training of nursing professionals in Catalonia and the quality and prestige of the Nursing School in several international rankings, in which it holds the 45th position worldwide. “The pandemic —said Estrada— showed the role of nurses as a key element in the healthcare system. Nurses contributed to leaving behind this nightmare with human care”, noted Estrada. “We deserve this chair”, he concluded.

Among the attendees in the event were the vice-rector for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transfer of the UB, Mercè Segarra; the vice-rector for Academic Policy and Quality, Pilar Delgado; the vice-rector for Equal Opportunities and Gender, Montse Puuig, and COIB representatives.
