“Wind farms, nuclear power plants, blockchain technology… Energy and environment under debate” is the title of the 10th Environmental Session to be held at the Aula Magna of the Historical Building of the UB, on Monday, May 30, at 10:00 a.m. This session, organized together with Família Torres and the meteorologist and lecturer of Physics at the UB Tomàs Molina, will gather a dozen experts to analyse the top energy model to ensure an energy transition that responds to the climate emergency.

The session will put emphasis on the challenges of this transition both in Spain and Catalonia, where the renewable energies still represent a small part of the electricity mix, that is, the value that expresses the CO2 related to the generation of electricity assumed. The session will be live streamed on the UB YouTube channel.

The opening ceremony will count on the participation of the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia; the president of Família Torres, Miguel A. Torres, and the scientific director and chair of the Session, Tomàs Molina, lecturer of Physics at the Faculty of Physics of the UB. The session will be opened by the minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, with the conference “La transició energètica: un projecte de país”, in video format. Then, researcher Antonio Turiel, from the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC), will talk about the challenges of energy transition.

Then, the roundtable “Green energy and transitory green energies in Catalonia under debate” will gather the experts Sarai Sarroca, director of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia; José María Baldasano, doctor in Chemical Sciences at the UB and emeritus professor at UPC; Alfredo García, telecommunications engineer and scientific communicator, and Carles Riba, president of the Collective for a New Economic and Social Model (CMES).

In the second part of the session, Sergi Cuadrat, managing director at ALLCOT Group, will explain the role of blockchain in the decarbonization of the energy sector. His speech will be followed by the roundtable “Economic and social challenges of the new energy model”, with the participation of the experts Eduard de Ribot, representative of SOS Costa Brava; Tatiana Sibila, from Extinction Rebelion; Jordi Martín, spokesperson of the Local Energy Community (CEL) of Caldes de Montbui, and Adrián Fernández, from Greenpeace Spain.

The director general for Energy of the Climate Action Secretariat of the Catalan Government, Assumpta Farran, will close the conference block with a speech on energy strategy in Catalonia.

Carlota Martí, head of Media at the European Commission Representation in Barcelona, will present the conclusions of the 10th Environmental Session before the end of the event, which will be closed by Ernest Abadal, vice-rector assigned to the Rector and for Teaching and Research Staff of the UB; Miguel A. Torres, president of Família Torres, and Tomàs Molina.

The session will end with the award ceremony for the 8th Torres & Earth Prize to environmental innovation, aimed at finding and honouring the studies, projects, experiences and initiatives that help preserving the environment.

The 10th Environmental Session is held as part of the Nature Week, from May 22 to June 5, an initiative promoted by the Network for the Conservation of Nature (XCN) to raise awareness on the importance of protecting the environment.
