The UBʼs School of Modern Languages (EIM) opens its registration for this summerʼs intensive language courses. This yearʼs program includes free courses to prepare a stay abroad for those who have a mobility grant for the academic year 2022/2023 and courses to teach in English.

Those students with a UB international mobility placement for the exchange program 2022/2023 can improve their language skills before mobbing to their host university, through the subsidized access to EIMʼs summer courses. In these cases, the School offers 50-hour language courses, which are free for those students who took the accreditation test, and cost 30 euros for the rest. The language of each course is the official language or the vernacular academic language of the host country, information stated in the resolution document of the exchange grants.

If the students want to take more than 50 hours, there is the option of completing the resting 50 hours of a 100-hour intensive course (equivalent to the totality of a European level) applying the subsidy to the first 50 hours. This information is available in the section of Grants and Financial Aid on the EIM website.

The language level of these courses is set according to the accredited level at the time of applying for the grant. However, if the students have upgraded this level, EIM offers advice from a coordinator in order to adjust it to the real level and therefore improve the use of the course.

This year, the number of students of the University of Barcelona who take part in an exchange program and can use this service is 1,458. Three-hundred out of these 1,458 students took the level accreditation test at EIM last January.

English as a career opportunity

Since the academic year 2020/2021, the School of Modern Languages of the University of Barcelona is an authorized entre to certify the CELTA and DELTA Cambridge certificates.  The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is aimed at people who wish to start their professional careers as teachers with a certain experience, people who want to study to then travel and teach English, foreigners without teaching experience, philologists and professionals with an experience in language schools.

CELTA is the most distinguished teaching certificate worldwide and the tests to obtain it are assessed by the University of Cambridge. The CELTA course in EIM consists of a minimum of 120 face-to-face teaching hours, divided into theoretical classes (in which the students learn the class management, analysis of language, teaching techniques and design of the appropriate didactic materials) and teaching practical lessons with real trainees (students put in practice what they have studied at school with students with different levels). At the end of the course, they will have carried out a minimum of six hours of teaching, observed and assessed by the tutors. The schedule and fees are available on the website of the course.
