The session Memòries Subalternes addresses the struggles of the LGTB+ community
On Tuesday, 21 June, at 9:00 a.m., the Chapel of the Historical Building of the UB is holding the first edition of the annual session Memòries Subalternes, dedicated to the LGTB+ community struggles against the repression they have undergone. Organized by the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) of the UB Solidarity Foundation, the sessions will include interventions by researchers and activists from several European countries.
On Tuesday, 21 June, at 9:00 a.m., the Chapel of the Historical Building of the UB is holding the first edition of the annual session Memòries Subalternes, dedicated to the LGTB+ community struggles against the repression they have undergone. Organized by the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) of the UB Solidarity Foundation, the sessions will include interventions by researchers and activists from several European countries.
First, Stefanie Endlich, honorary lecturer of Public Art at the Berlin University of the Arts, will talk about the monuments dedicated to gay and lesbian people in Europe. Then, a roundtable will follow, on queer stories and the commemoration of their past in Europe, specially in Italy, Spain and Poland. The speakers in this roundtable will be the researchers of the Kamil Karczewski European University Institute, Riccardo Bulgarelli and Moisés Fernández Cano. The other roundtable is titled “From a local to a global perspective: lesbians in Catalonia”, and will include the participation of Mercè Otero Vidal, activist in Ca la Dona and the Feminist Network; Sofia Bengoetxea Sabaté, Buddhist nun and trans activist at EnFemme, and Maria Giralt Castells, director of Gayles.tv, vice-president of the LGTB+ Chamber of Catalonia and director of Social Pride Barcelona. The film Grosse Freiheit ('great freedom'), awarded by the jury of the prize in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival 2021, will also be screened and its screenwriter, Thomas Reider, will comment on it. The session will be closed by the rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, and the minister for Equality and Feminism, Tània Verge.
The vice-rector for Equal Opportunities and Gender of the UB, Montserrat Puig, says the initiative is part of the Equality Plan of the University, especially in the bloc of Diversities and Intersectionality with Gender. “The University is focused on the attention to diversity and must attend to the realities of the LGTB+ collective”, says the vice-rector.
This session aims to give a voice to those social groups that have been silenced or marginalized. This first edition, dedicated to the LGTB+ community wants to remember the struggles and successes of this group defending their rights to reach a truly egalitarian society in Europe. The session counts on the support from the Department of Equality and Feminism of the Catalan Government and the co-funding of the Citizenship, Equality, Rights and Values EU programme.
