A total of 218 female researchers of the University of Barcelona are listed in the ranking published by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) with the top 5,000 female researchers of Spain. The number of UB women scientists rises to 262 if we include those belonging to hospitals affiliated at the institution and cases of dual affiliation.

In the ranking, the UB holds the first position among the Catalan universities and the third position in Spain, following CSIC and the Complutense University of Madrid. Among the UB researchers are, in the first positions, Rosa Lamuela, from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences; Carme Junqué, from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Licia Verde, from the Faculty of Physics. The vice-rector for Equal Opportunities and Gender of the UB, Montserrat Puig, wanted to highlight the “important positions held by the female researchers of the University of Barcelona”. She also noted that it is necessary “to give visibility to the presence of women in the field of research, much more than it is now”.

The CSIC ranking has been conducted following the indicators of the personal profiles of the researchers in Google Scholar; specifically, using the h-index, an indicator that quantifies the scientific performance and the impact of published articles by the researchers, as well as the number of citations. The ranking gathers female researchers from Spain and from other countries who are doing their research in Spanish organizations. The aim is to increase the visibility of women researchers and their tasks.
