According to the new edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai Ranking, the University of Barcelona is the only Spanish university listed among the top 200 worldwide. ARWU analyses around 2,000 universities from all over the world and publishes the list of the top 1,000.

According to the new edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), better known as the Shanghai Ranking, the University of Barcelona is the only Spanish university listed among the top 200 worldwide. ARWU analyses around 2,000 universities from all over the world and publishes the list of the top 1,000.

Once more, the global ranking is headed by the American universities. The first places are held by Harvard and Stanford, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) holds the third place. Spain features ileven centres among the top 500 worldwide. The Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Valencia and the University of Granada are within the 201-300 range. Pompeu Fabra University, the Autonomous University of Madrid and the University of the Basque Country are in the 301-400 range.

The Shanghai ranking is carried out with the analysis of bibliometric data in six indicators: the number of relevant awards (Nobel Prizes, Fields medal) obtained by the students and staff of the universities; the highly cited researchers in the 21 research areas selected by Clarivate Analytics; the number of papers published in Nature and Science; the total number of indexed papers in Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and in Social Science Citation Index (SSCI); and the per capita academic performance of an institution.
