Llengües de gel, a work by Jordi Cañizares, member of Alumni UB and graduate in Law, won the first prize, in the nature category, of the 16th edition of the Photography Contest fotoNAT-UB 2022. Pablo Bou, AdSS member of the R&D Maritime Network of Catalonia (BlueNetCat) of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, was awarded the first prize in the wildlife category for his photograph Espectre caçador.

FotoNAT-UB is an emblematic initiative created by the UB Animal Biodiversity Resource Centre (CRBA) which has the support of the Vice-rectorʼs Office for Research, the Vice-rectorʼs Office for Students and Participation and the Faculty of Biology. The contest awards the top photographs in the categories of wildlife —animal photography— and nature —natural or slightly modified landscapes, geology, wild fauna and flora, and the human-nature relationship. The awards were given on 1st December in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Biology, in a ceremony that included the participation of the vice-rector for Students and Participation, Marta Ferrer, and the CRBA director, lecturer Antoni Serra, member of the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences and of the Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio).

Other awardees in the category of nature were: Pepe Bosch, TRS at the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Physics (second prize, Nebulosa Rosetta); Joan de la Malla, former student of the CRBA wildlife photography courses (secondary award, Paisatge de somni); Pau Millán, bachelor student of Geology at the Faculty of Earth Sciences (secondary award, Gegant vespertí); Pepe Bosch, TRS at the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Physics (secondary award, Berrocal i Via Làctia), and Marina Duarte, bachelor student of Conservation of Cultural Assets at the Faculty of Fine Arts (secondary award, Bombolles dʼaire congelat). In the wildlife category, the awardees were: Alba Llorens, bachelor student of Marine Sciences at the Faculty of Earth Sciences (second prize, Calidoscopi de mar-Sabella spallanzanii); Joan Estrada, masterʼs degree student of Ecology, Environmental Management and Restoration at the Faculty of Biology (secondary award, Arc de Sant Martí amb plomes); Gerard Martín, bachelor student of Biology at the Faculty of Biology (secondary award, Saltícid coronant lʼescurçó ibèric); Israel Collado, AdSS member at the Faculty of Law (secondary award, Supervivència), and Alina Lucea, former student of the CRBA wildlife photography courses (secondary award, Abella llaminera).

The awarded works of the 16th edition of fotoNAT-UB were selected out of a total of 247 photographs —144 in the nature category and 103 in the wildlife category—, submitted by 130 participants. During the selection, forty photographs were selected as finalists —20 in wildlife and 20 in nature. This year, 82 students, 11 Alumni UB members, 19 former students of CRBA courses, 10 AdSS and 9 TRS members participated in the contest.

Like every year, the exhibition of the winning and the finalist photographs is shown in an exhibition in the CRBA headquarters, at the Faculty of Biology. The exhibition, which includes a video with all the submitted images in the contest, can be seen through the link on their website.
