UB professor Josep Maria Fullola is one of 38 researchers from different countries selected as founding members of the International Academy of Prehistory and Protohistory. The aim of the new institution, recently created with the support of the International Academic Union, is to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge in these disciplines.

The Palaeolithic hunter-gathered societies in Western Europe has been the main focus of the research of Josep Maria Fullola, who began working at the University of Barcelona in 1978. Fullola became a senior full professor in prehistory in 1985 at this same university, where he continues teaching now. Since 1987 he has been the principal investigator (IP) of 11 three-year competitive R&D projects from the Spanish Government and since 1993 the IP of the Prehistoric Studies and Research Seminar (SERP), quality research group recognised by the Catalan Government.

Other topics of his interest are the historiography and the use of archaeology and the knowledge of prehistory to benefit the general public (exhibitions, teaching materials or popular science books). He participates in teaching and research evaluation programmes from Spanish bodies (ANECA, ANEP, AQU, AGAUR, AVAP) and other international agencies (France, Belgium, Portugal and EU). Moreover, he is the vice-president of the International Union of Prehistorical and Protohistorical Sciences (UISPP).
