Grup d'Estudis d'Història del Mediterrani Occidental. Societat, poder i cultura a l'època moderna (GEHMO)

General information

Recogised research group by the Generalitat de Catalunya

This project develops a comparison of the system of the vice-regal government in the Spanish Empire during the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries. We take the Catalan experience as a starting point in order to widen the observation to various Mediterranean territories such as Valencia, Naples, Sicily and Sardinia, including a reference to the practice in the Portuguese empire and the government of its own viceroyalty. Our aim is to stretch beyond the current institutional analysis of the study of the matter and thus to incorporate the cultural perspective that would allow us to deepen the concept of vice-regal courts, which we consider as the main elements of articulation of the empire. Therefore, the intention of our research is that of the government of complex political systems; that is, the connection between unity and diversity in great power systems.
