Josep Bargalló

Former first minister of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

Josep Bargalló Valls (Torredembarra, 1958) holds a UB degree in Catalan Philology from the Estudis of Tarragona.

He became a school teacher in 1981 and served as headmaster of the Institut de Batxillerat Pons d’Icart in Tarragona from 1985 to 1987. He has also been an editor, literary critic, screenwriter (doing the Catalan adaptation of the dialogues in Bigas Luna’s film "The Tit and the Moon") and columnist.

A member of the ERC political party since 1995, he was a founding member of the Assembly of Catalonia, in which he represented his locality. He was a member of PSUC, PSAN and Nacionalistes d’Esquerra. Holding office from 1992, he decided to end his political career in the last elections, standing at the bottom on his party’s Tarragona list. However, ERC’s electoral success and the Tinell Pact brought him back into government as the Minister for Education under Pasqual Maragall. As a result of the political crisis following Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira’s meeting with ETA leaders and Carod’s subsequent resignation, he rose to the post of First Minister.
