Leiden Ranking
The UB's ranking position

The UB is the top university in Spain in several rankings of indicators about scientific impact and inter-institutional collaboration. On scientific impact, it heads Spanish ranking as it has the best global results in number of publications (P), mean citation score (MCS), the average number of citations of a university’s publications, normalized for field differences and publication year (mean normalized citation score, MNCS), and the proportion of the publications of a university that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 10 % most frequently cited (PPtop 10 %), which is considered the most emblematic bibliometric indicator on Leiden’s ranking. About institutional collaboration, the UB heads the proportion of the publications of a university that have been co-authored by two or more countries (proportion of international collaborative publications, PPint collab).

Key performance indicators

The Leiden Ranking offers the following indicators of the scientific impact of a university:

  • Mean citation score (MCS). The average number of citations of the publications of a university.
  • Mean normalized citation score (MNCS). The average number of citations of the publications of a university, normalized for field differences, publication year, and document type. An MNCS value of two, for instance, means that the publications of a university have been cited twice above world average.
  • Proportion top 10% publications (PPtop 10%). The proportion of the publications of a university that, compared with other similar publications, belong to the top 10% most frequently cited. Publications are considered similar if they were published in the same field and the same publication year and if they have the same document type.
Subject areas

The Leiden Ranking 2011/2012 is based on a set of bibliometric indicators, which analyse productivity, scientific impact of universities, and universities’ involvement in scientific collaboration, based on the data included on Web of Science of Thomson Reuters for the period 2008–2011.
