A PROTECTED SPECIES

Bonelli's Eagle is considered to be a ENDANGERED species inside the SPEC 3 category that determines the state of conservation of the European populations of birds.

For this reason Bonelli´s Eagle is included in the annex 1 of the guidelines established by the European Union for the protection of the most threatened birds in this territory (EU Wild Bird Directive 79/409/CEE, 91/244/CE and 94/C241/08). This fact indicates that, in addition to being a species protected in the whole European Union, the member states have the obligation to take action to guarantee the conservation of its populations and habitats.

Likewise, it is included in the "Red book of the vertebrates of Spain ", in the category IN DANGER, and in the “National Catalogue of Threatened Species " in the category VULNERABLE. For this reason the laws of the Spanish state (Royal decree 3181/1980) and of Catalonia (Law 3/1988 of protection of the animals) grant him the category of protected species.

The SPEC categories (Species of European Conservation Concern) determine the state of conservation of the species of birds present in the whole Europe, in relation to the plenty of their European populations and to their distribution, both on the European and the world level. Among the different SPEC categories (1-4) there are stipulated different levels of threat of the species according to the number of pairs present in Europe and of the demographic tendency of their population (Tucker and Healt 1994).

SPEC categories

SPEC 1: Species present in Europe that are considered to be world-wide ENDANGERED and need global measures of conservation.

SPEC 2: Species PRESENT PRINCIPALLY IN EUROPE that are in a state of UNFAVORABLE conservation in Europe.

SPEC 3: Species with populations CONCENTRATED NOT ONLY IN EUROPE that are in a state of UNFAVORABLE conservation in Europe.

SPEC 4: Species PRESENT PRINCIPALLY IN EUROPE but with a state of FAVORABLE conservation in Europe.

Non-SPEC: Species CONCENTRATED NOT ONLY ON EUROPE and with a state of FAVORABLE conservation in Europe.
