The Guide aims to facilitate inter-university communication and improve the quality of the institutional English-language documents we produce for international readers. It is also intended to help our community bolster its knowledge of the English language and acquire the linguistic competence in English that is widely considered to be necessary.
Loosely modelled on existing style manuals (including the English Style Guide of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation and The Chicago Manual of Style), the Guide is organised into different sections addressing specific and general aspects of language style. In line with the other resources on this website, examples of appropriate, inappropriate and incorrect language are boxed in green, yellow and red squares, respectively. Where we consider it helpful for the reader, words in the examples are also highlighted in those colours.
