BARCELONA
The Barcelona's complete Public Art Virtual Museum

PRESENTATION

This site is a presentation of the Catalogue of the sculptures and other works of art situated in the public space of the city of Barcelona, or that can be observed from there, that are the collection of The Virtual Museum of Public Art of Barcelona.

They are the works that could be defined as being representative of what has come to be known as "Public Art" - Art Públic in the original Catalan version of this catalogue- or Civil Art, manifestations of decorum, ornamentation or mementoes of the city, works that the civil society has erected with an intention of permanence over the past eight centuries.

A majority of them are now publicly owned, others are private property, while still others are part of formerly private gardens that have been transformed into public spaces, but all of them are now elements of representation and identity.

The 1658 compositions, which can be subdivided into 2977 individual works give us the opportunity to follow not only the evolution of the art of sculpture in Catalonia throughout the aforementioned period, but also the evolution of Catalan history.

The Catalogue also includes the no longer extant monuments, artistic contributions present in infrastructures such as the Metro, those placed within cemetery areas or remembrance plaques and industrially produced urban monumental furniture.

The Virtual Museum of Public Art of Barcelona is increasing the collection with the sculptoric programs for public and private buildings open to visitors, joint to those projected but unbuilt monuments, even when documentation is available, which, for methodological rather than conceptual reasons we have not included on the App version, even when documentation is available, nor have we included those monuments that for different reasons have disappeared from public spaces.

Starting on these premises the Catalogue aims to be exhaustive independently of criteria of judgement.
