Científicos de todo el mundo alertan a la Humanidad. Segunda Alerta
15.364 científicos de 184 países diferentes (entre ellos miembros del IRBio) firman el Manifiesto "Scientists 'Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice" publicado en la revista BioScience el pasado día 13 de noviembre de 2017 (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/bix125). En 1992, la Unión de Concerned Scientists y más de 1.700 científicos independientes escribieron el "World Scientists 'Warning to Humanity". Estos científicos estaban preocupados por el estado del planeta Tierra y llamaban a la humanidad a reducir la destrucción ambiental advirtiendo que se requiere un gran cambio en nuestra gestión de la Tierra y su vida, si se quiere evitar la miseria humana.
En su manifiesto, mostraron que los humanos están en colisión con el mundo natural. Expresaron su preocupación en cuanto a los daños actuales, inminentes o potenciales en el planeta Tierra que implican: el agotamiento del ozono, la disponibilidad de agua dulce, el agotamiento de la vida marina, las zonas muertas en el océano, la pérdida forestal, la destrucción de la biodiversidad, el cambio climático y el crecimiento continuado de la población humana. Y se anunció que se necesitaban urgentemente cambios fundamentales para evitar las consecuencias que nuestra trayectoria actual puede conllevar en un futuro.
Tras estos veinticinco años desde el primer Manifiesto, se revisa y evalúa el estado del planeta y se concluye que: la humanidad no ha hecho avances suficientes para resolver los retos ambientales previstos y, alarmantemente, la mayoría de ellos están empeorando. Este segundo Manifiesto aconseja a la humanidad que necesita cambiar su manera de hacer para ayudar al planeta sino se quiere llegar al colapso.
