Presentation of the campaign against food waste “We are what we throw away”

The University of Barcelona and the Banc dels Aliments Foundation, aware of the serious problems of Catalan society in times of crisis, join efforts and set up an initiative which aims at opening a debate about food waste and the need to find a solution. 2014 has been designated as the European Year against Food Waste.

The University of Barcelona and the Banc dels Aliments Foundation, aware of the serious problems of Catalan society in times of crisis, join efforts and set up an initiative which aims at opening a debate about food waste and the need to find a solution. 2014 has been designated as the European Year against Food Waste.

In this context, the UB and the Banc dels Aliments Foundation set up the campaign “We are what we throw away”, which is presented on 5th March, at 1 p.m., in the Food and Nutrition campus of the UB, located in Santa Coloma de Gramenet. On this campus are taught the degrees in Human Nutrition and Dietetics and in Food Science and Technology, courses of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UB.

The presentation is chaired by Misericòrdia Garcia, commissioner for Social Development and Ageing of the UB. The personalities who participate in the event are: Antoni Sansalvadó, president of Banc dels Aliments; Mercè Pallàs, vice-dean of Academic Affairs and Students of the Faculty of Pharmacy; Màrius Rubiralta, director of the Food and Nutrition Torribera campus, and Raul Moreno, deputy major of Social Welfare and Families of the Santa Coloma de Gramenet City Council.

During the event, Abel Mariné, professor emeritus from the Department of Nutrition and Bromatology of the Faculty of Pharmacy (affiliated center with the Barcelona Knowledge Campus), gives a lecture about best before dates on food; Jordi Peix, vice-president of Banc del Aliments, present the Plan to fight against food waste, and Antoni Massanés, director general of the Alícia Foundation and researcher from the Food Observatory of the UB (ODELA) and Paco Muñoz from the Environment Office of the Autonomous University of Barcelona present the publication Guia per a la reducció del malbaratament alimentari en el sector de l'hostaleria, la restauració i el càtering.

The event, which is promoted by the Office of the Commissioner for Social Development and Ageing, is supported by the Food and Nutrition Torribera campus of the UB (affiliated center with the HUBc, the health campus of excellence) and Alumni UB.
