New advances in hydrocarbon exploitation techniques, human-induced seismicity, newest methods of modelling geological processes and reservoir characterization are some of the contents of the European Regional Conference and Exhibition of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), a scientific conference on petroleum geology that takes place from 13 to 15 May in Barcelona.

The scientific conference is organised by AAPG together with the University of Barcelona (UB), the University of Zaragoza, the Geological Society of Spain and the Spanish Association of Petroleum Geologists and Geophysicists (AGGEP), and sponsored by REPSOL and CEPSA. The conference is headed by Dr Lluís Cabrera, dean of the Faculty of Geology of UB, and Dr Tomás Zapata, director of Geology of Repsol Exploración. This year, the conference —hosted at the Princesa Sofia Hotel in Barcelona— gathers around 200 research experts and professionals who share the most recent geological and geophysical advances within the petroleum industry. We highlight here the participation of experts on unconventional plays, numerical modelling of geological processes and human-induced seismicity.

Within the international conference, the Faculty of Geology and the Geomodels Research Institute of UB have a stand to promote teaching and research activities carried out by their departments and research groups. Interesting examples related to petroleum geology are provided.

The programme includes two field trips: one to the Riutort Oil Mine located in Guardiola de Berguedà, conducted by Albert Permanyer (UB); and the other to the Baix Llobregat-Western Vallès in which members of the Geomodels Research Institute of UB participate.
