Another year, the students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona (UB) got the best results on the examination to become resident medical intern (MIR), according to data published by the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality. 95.2% of UB students who took the examination passed it; this is the highest percentage among Spanish universities. Moreover, UB also has the highest percentage of students who were able to choose medical specialty, 87%.

The examination MIR takes place annually. Its main objective is to establish the order in which graduates in Medicine choose the specialty they want to take and the hospital where the training programme is developed. This year, 10,239 candidates from Spanish, European and worldwide universities sat the examination.

Out of these candidates, 292 got their degree from UB, most of them between 2007 and 2013, and 278 of them —that means 95.2 %— got a mark that enabled them to choose speciality. UB is listed first among the universities with the highest number of students who passed the examination. The Autonomous University of Madrid classifies second, with 94.6% of students who passed the examination.

The dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr Francesc Cardellach, affirms that these results “make students really happy and recognize the work carried out by the Facultyʼs teaching staff and administrative and service staff”. Furthermore, Cardellach considers that “these excellent results may be improved thanks to the implementation of a new MIR that includes an evaluation of skills and attitudes”.

This year, entry grade requirements were 35% of the arithmetic mean of the best ten marks of the exam. It was 198 points, which means 66 correct answers. This mark means the 90% of the final mark that establishes the order to choose specialty. The other 10% is calculated according to the universityʼs scale.

UB students: first to get specialty

The results of the students from UB were also good regarding the selection of the medical specialty to be taken. 88.7% of students who sat the examination chose MIR specialty, the highest percentage among Spanish universities, followed by the Faculty of Medicine in Albacete of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (88.6%). It is necessary to point out that, besides academic results, other criteria are considered when choosing a medical speciality, for instance: the number of positions offered in each specialty per hospital and the autonomous community that candidates demand most. In this sense, this year, 85% of UB students who got a medical specialization chose to take it in Catalonia and 5% of them in the Balearic Islands.
