The initiative is part of the agreement signed in April 2013. It establishes that these three institutions are committed to collaborate in order to disseminate the knowledge associated to BWR.

Courses will be included in the platform Canvas by Instructure. The University of Barcelona, together with Inlea —an organization specialized in designing online training programmes—, will provide certificates to those students who ask for them.

High-level knowledge available to everyone

The courses of the Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus are Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC). The most important universities around the world are offering this type of courses as a way to promote free knowledge transfer. Payment is only required if the student asks for an academic certificate.
The main objective of the Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus is to disseminate university knowledge in subject areas related to ocean sailing. The campus will be set up with five courses on Meteorology, Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics, Oceanography and Chronobiology. Courses include materials in Catalan, Spanish and English. They begin in November 2014 and end in May 2015. Each course lasts about six or eight weeks.

A completely new initiative

The Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus is a pioneering initiative in the world of oceanic sailing. For FNOB the campus means an extension of the educational programme of the race which has been a model in bringing knowledge associated to oceanic sailing closer to primary and secondary students. Thanks to MOOC, FNOB takes a step forward in disseminating oceanic sailing knowledge at the university and professional environments and it makes it available to amateurs interested in sailing, sport, science and technology.

For the University of Barcelona, although it is involved in many projects, the campus is a new initiative because the Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus are the first MOOC launched by the institution.

Coursesʼ contents are being developed by lecturers form the University of Barcelona together with members of the Department of Education and editorial staff of the Barcelona World Race, and experts from the Hospital Quirón-Teknon and the Institute of Marine Sciences of CSIC. Moreover, prestigious experts will participate in the courses.

The Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus is officially presented on 30 September at the Barcelona World Race Interpretation Centre.
