Until 9 July, the Arts Courtyard of the Historic Building of the UB hosts a photography exhibition that is part of the Documentary Photography Barcelona Festival DOCfield>15. The exhibition constitutes a visual representation of Crónica21: an on-line multidisciplinary archive of documentary stories and analysis about the deepening economic, political and social crisis in Spain, from 2008 to the present.

It is a collective exhibition composed by large format photographs (1,50 x 1,50 m) by Enrique Flores (Cuaderno de Sol), Gianfranco Tripodo (#Spanishrevolution), Markel Redondo (Castillos de arena), Olmo Calvo (Vidas deshauciadas), Samuel Aranda (Spanish crisis) and Xavier Galiana (Retrato de una crisis).

Crónica 21 was inspired by the archive preserved by the Library of Congress of the United States which illustrates the Great Depression of the 30s. This outstanding collection was an initiative of the Farm Security within US President Franklin Rooseveltʼs New Deal and continues being a useful tool to understand the political and social context of that period.

Although there is a large amount of existing material addressing the current situation in Spain, it is not necessarily reaching the broad public and too often important stories go unread and unseen by a wide audience. The objecive of Crónica 21 is to pull these existing stories and projects together into one “container” that can be easily accessed by the public. The archive has been designed to continually feed new work, from authors to the public. It also aims to promote debate on social networks in order to raise awareness and foster a positive future change.

DOCfield is an initiative organised by the Photographic Social Vision Foundation, a non-profit organization that brings documentary photography and photojournalism to society as a means of raising awareness. The festival seeks to fulfil two main aims: first, to turn the city into open windows onto the world we live in and realities that are usually unknown as they do not catch the attention of the media, and second to consolidate this annual meeting with documentary photography in the cultural agenda of Barcelona and Europe.

On 22 May, at 7.30 p.m., the main entrance hall of the Historic Building of the UB hosted the official presentation of this yearʼs DOCfield edition.
