On Friday April 29, Professor Joaquim Prats, lecturer of Teacher Training in Social Sciences at the University of Barcelona, was recognized Doctor honoris causa by the University of Murcia. The nomination of Prats was submitted by the department of Teacher Training in Social Sciences and Mathematics and the department of Modern and Contemporary History and History of America of the University of Murcia, and defended by Francisco Chacón, Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the same university. Chacón sees Prats as an “education innovator” and highlights his teaching and research activity, as well as his time being general sub-Director of Teacher Training in the Ministry of Education and Sciences, and member of the National Teacher Education Accreditation Council, in field of the Social and Legal Sciences since 2007.

Joaquim Prats Cuevas is Doctor of Modern History and Professor in the University of Barcelona, major in History Didactics, in Education System Analysis and in History of Universities. He had been tenured university lecturer of Modern History at the universities of Barcelona and Lleida, and also upper secondary school teacher (1974-1983) and Director of Eugeni dʼOrs upper secondary school in Badalona.


In research, he is the director of the Teaching and Learning of Sciences, Languages, Arts and Humanities doctorate program at the Doctorate School of the University of Barcelona. He is also director of the research group of History, Geography and other Social Sciencesʼ Didactics (DHIGECS). He has tutored several doctoral thesis and research projects and has more than one hundred and fifty scientific and academic publications on History Didactics, Educational System and Modern History. Prats has been a member of several groups of pedagogical renovation in the field of History education.


Throughout his life, he has been in charge of several roles: he has been Secretary of Universities and Research at Generalitat; President of the Evaluation Council of the Education System; President of the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency; head of territory and municipal services in the area of Barcelona during the first years of Generalitat de Catalunya, and education government advisor during Josep Tarradellas presidency.


Prats is now member of the Consultatory Board of the University of Barcelona (Junta Consultiva). He has had several academic positions. He has presided the Teaching Innovation Council of the Institute for Lifelong Learning Foundation IL3 of the University of Barcelona and has been Director of the Education Virtual Campus of the UB. He has also been member of the University of Barcelona Senate, member of Scientific Policy Council, Governing Council, vice-President of the General Study of Lleida (part VI of UB), head of ICE Teacher Training of the UB and other positions with high responsibility in this university. He has been an external research project assessor (ANEP, AGAUR, Colombia COLCIENCIAS, Argentina ANPCT, IBE-UNESCO, and other entities), and has been member of the National Tenured University Lecturers Education Accreditation Council, in the field of Social and Legal Sciences, of ANECA (BOE 14-XII-2007).
