Courses from all areas

In the following weeks, there will be very diverse courses: topics will range from social networks to Catalan rumba or jazz, through forensic phonetics, nanotechnology, neurodegenerative diseases, or sub-Saharan Africa urgency, among others.

The study of voice in judicial processes
The analysis of spoken interaction in court is more common and necessary every day, in order to see if two voice samples can be appointed to the same speaker or whether this possibility can be ruled out. The course on Forensic phonetics, the study of the voice in court shows one of the most interesting and unknown applications of phonetics: the forensic phonetics.

The importance of social networks for professional careers
Social networks have become a key tool for organizations, both for their role of communication, creativity and innovation, and for their transformation into professional vehicles. This course shows the most used networks and their repercussion in the job area.

A critical look to sub-Saharan reality
In the last decade there have been big convulsions related to the African reality. On the one hand, the continent seems to have undergone big economic, political and social changes which resulted in a new “afrooptimistic” speech. On the other hand, the consolidation of emerging countries (China, India, Brasil) generated a new global context with direct consequences on the African continent. The urgency of sub-Saharan Africa in a multipolar world aims to analyse the implications of both phenomena in the African reality, and exploring socioeconomic, socio-political, and socio-demographic challenges of this continent.

Catalan rumba
Els Juliols offer the first university course on the phenomenon of the Catalan rumba and gather the main experts of this topic, after the Catalan Parliament recognized it as popular and traditional Catalan music, and being nominated to be UNESCO cultural immaterial heritage. The course teaches about the problem of the definition and origins of the Catalan rumba, a unique socio-musical movement which was developed during the 20th century in Catalonia. It teaches on its history and its connection with other music styles, and goes deeper with the figure of Peret, the relation between gipsies and rumba, or the historic ambivalence in cultural heritage.

Jazz: more than music
Jazz is a music style that grew fast, integrating itself not only in personal collections of music but also in the media, movies or advertising. The course Jazz: more than music touches on the main sub-styles of jazz and its history, in Catalonia and Europe.

Artistic and cultural relations between Llull, Gaudí and Dalí
From Llull to Gaudí and Dalí analyses the common background of the works and reflections of these three important figures of the Catalan culture, and also the way in which they perceived each otherʼs works. Returning to the medieval world, the way to tie architecture and art with nature laws, or the influence of wagnerianism are elements that allow understanding the complicities between some important authors of the 20th century culture.

The ICT challenges in passengersʼ transportation
All European countries -and countries from other continents- have urban transport in cars appearing in the media due to taxi drivers complaining in several cities, but also fue to the string of judicial acts -not always with positive results for the taxi drivers. The course on Taxi and apps analyses some issues such as the regularization of taxi activities, public intervention in charging fixation, taxi apps, ICT as a rule change element or issues of this sector in non-metropolitan fields.

Opportunities and repercussions of nanotechnology
No wonder nanotechnology, which operates in millimetre millionths, is not the future but developing in the present: it is proved by economic investments and the variety of products from nanoscience and nanotechnology that are available in the market for a wide range of applications. The course What do you want to know about nanotechnology? establishes a global dialogue on opportunities and repercussions of nanotechnology and touches on ethic and philosophical factors about some nanotechnology implications.

What are neurodegenerative diseases and what do they represent?
In the recent years, there have been lots of efforts to study neurodegenerative diseases and to research for possible treatments, both palliative and therapeutic. The aim of the course Neurodegenerative diseases: from biology to clinics is to explain from a multidisciplinary perspective, what are the conformation diseases and what they mean, their physiological and pathologic repercussions, current clinics and future potential treatments.
