The University of Barcelona will award the Gold Medal to Alberto Barbieri, Rector of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), in an event which will take place on Tuesday, September 27, at 12 h, in the Paranimph of the Historical Building. The event will be chaired by the Rector, Dídac Ramírez, with the participation of the General Secretary Isabel Miralles, and the current President of the Board of Trustees of the University, Joan Corominas. In the ceremony, which will be streamed on UBtv channel, the extraordinary awards for bachelor degrees and master degrees of the academic year 2015-2016 will be given.

Public accounting officer, administration expert and with a wide résumé as lecturer, researcher and academic authority, Alberto Barbieri has directed the main public university of Argentina since March 2014. The honor awarded by the University of Barcelona responds to the will of strengthening shared relations and projects between both institutions, such as the recently created Ibero-American University Union.

A long career in higher education

Barbieri is Doctor in Administration and Public Accountant for the UBA and holds a master degree in Business and Administration at the European Business School of Madrid. In 2014 he entered the Rectorʼs office in UBA, where he had previously been vice-rector (1010-1014) and dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences (2006-2014). He was also director of the Public Management School and the master degree in Public Administration of the same University.

As lecturer and researcher, he focused his work on the organization administration systems and health administration, fields he majored in. Likewise, he is number academic in the European Academy of Management and Business Economics (AEDEM), member of the Association for University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) of the United States, and vice-president of the Latin-American Association of the Faculties and Schools in Accounting and Administration (ALAFEC). As a researcher, he directed several projects and reached the category of main researcher of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET).

He was also principal counselor of the Economic and Social Council for the city of Buenos Aires, and counselor for multilateral credit organisms such as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (BIRF) and the Inter-American Bank of Development (BID) in different American countries. In addition, he chairs the first headquarter of the Confucius Institute in South America.

Among his scientific works there are the books La gestión como clave en la integración iberoamericana (Eudeba, 2008) and Gestión de la salud en la longevidad (Pearson, 2010). He also published several articles of his expertize fields in newspapers and current affairs journals.

He has been invited professor to many universities, such as Paris-Sorbonne, La Sapienza in Rome, Northwestern of Chicago, Grenoble-Alps in France, or National Autonomous of Mexico, among others. He received several awards throughout his career, such as honorary doctorates awarded by the National University of Asunción (Paraguay) and University of Guayaquil (Ecuador).
