In this ninth edition of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards, the award in the category of development cooperation has been given to Pedro Alonso, professor of Public Health of the UB, founder of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and current director of the WHO Global Malaria Programme. The award was given to Alonso to “promote the fight against malaria with the use of mosquito nets imbued with insecticide, which lowered mortality by a 60%, and trials of the first vaccine that gets a partial efficacy against the disease”. Peter Myler, from the University of Washington (United States) has been awarded in the same category.
