Volcanic eruptions, crystallized wines and food are some of the proposals that were presented in the finals of the 7th Contest of Crystallization at School, a day about science, art and inspiration that took place on Friday May 4 in CosmoCaixa, la Caixa Banking Foundation museum.

Like in previous editions, around 1,500 students from about fifty schools from all Catalonia, took part in this contest, which aims to promote scientific vocations among young students from upper secondary schools through attractive experiments from the field of crystallization.

The new edition of the Contest of Crystallization at School is organized by the University of Barcelona -in particular, by the Faculty of Earth Sciences and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i)- the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Universitat Rovira I Virgili and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Manresa. This contest is divided in different stages which include teacher training, the projects by the students, and the presentation of the crystallography projects -carried out with the scientific methodology- in front of a jury during an activity that follows the lines of a scientific conference.

This year, the awards for the 7th Contest of Crystallization at School were given to these projects:

The following took part in the award ceremony, which was opened by Lluís Noguera, director of CosmoCaixa: M. Teresa Calvet and Miquel Àngel Cuevas, lecturers from the Faculty of Earth Sciences of the UB; Magdalena Aguiló, professor from the Group on Physics and Crystallography of the URV; Joan Francesc Piniella, professor of the Unit of Crystallography and Mineralogy of UAB, and Anna Sanahuja, former director of CosmoCaixa, among others.

The contest, based on the original idea by the lecturer Juan Manuel García Ruiz (Laboratory of Crystallographic Studies (LEC-CSIC), is supported by Obra Social la Caixa, the Network of Crystallography and Crystallization “Factoria de Cristal·lització”, the Spanish Mineralogical Society (SEM), and the Group for Crystallography and Crystal Growth (GE3C).
