Paloma Fernández, lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, has been awarded the Jaume Vicens Vives Prize to the best book on economic history in Spain and Latin America, given by the Spanish Economic History Association. The award was given to her book Evolution of family business. Continuity and change in Latin America and Spain (Edward Elgar Publishing), coedited with Andrea Lluch.

The book analyses the features and evolution of the most important family businesses in Latin America and Spain, with contributions by twenty academicians from twelve different countries. It also analyses the families in the world of business regarding the different national economies and other factors such as foreign capital, migrations and politics. The authors deny any existence of a Latin kind of family capitalism and put emphasis on the diversity and national and regional differences. The book received the ex aequo award with The first export era revisited, edited by S. Kuntz-Ficker.

Paloma Fernández, lecturer of History of International Business and Family Business, focused her interest as researcher on the influence of personal networks in European companies during the transition from the early modern period to the late modern period, in several economic sectors (colonial trade, capital-investment industries) and two autonomic regions: Andalusia and Catalonia. Both by herself and working in collaborations, she has published articles and texts with a long-term view on the evolution and transformation of strategies belonging to Spanish family businesses regarding issues such as gender role, training and education, and management professionalism, internationalization, networks, and collective actions. Among her latest publications are Empresas familiars de Europa, América y Asia, una aproximación cuantitativa. (Bogotà, Ediciones Uniandes, 2017) and some articles on history of innovation and internationalization of Catalan family businesses in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields.
