Rommy Morales-Olivares
Rommy Morales-Olivares is Assistant Professor (Profesora Lectora) in the Department of Sociology at the University of Barcelona, Faculty of Economics and Business. Her academic trajectory lies at the intersection of social theory and comparative sociology, with particular attention to comparative social structure, change, and conflict in the contemporary Global South.
She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Barcelona (2018, Excellent Cum Laude) and a European PhD in Socioeconomics and Statistical Studies from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the University of Barcelona. Her academic training includes a Master’s Degree in Applied Social Research from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2012), funded by the Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program (IFP); a Postgraduate Diploma in Democracy and Diversity Studies from The New School for Social Research (2013); and a Master’s Degree in Applied Economics from Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Chile, in collaboration with Georgetown University (2009). She earned her BA in Sociology from Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Chile (2006, Magna Cum Laude).
She was a predoctoral researcher in the ERC Advanced Grant project Trajectories of Modernity (TRAMOD), directed by Peter Wagner, within which she developed her doctoral dissertation entitled “Trajectories of Economic Institutionalization in Post-Authoritarian Transitions: A Comparative Interpretation of Chile and South Africa.”
She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Sociology, University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa, 2018–2021). Subsequently, she held a postdoctoral position at the University of Barcelona (Margarita Salas contract 2022–2024) and a senior postdoctoral position at the Department of Sociology, University of Lleida (2024–2025) within the project CIVITAS - Citizenship, Values, and Political Attitudes in Transitioning Authoritarian States.
She has been a Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (Cologne, Germany) during two periods: 2021 and 2022–2023. She has also served as Senior Consultant in the Gender Affairs Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and as a researcher at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), participating in projects focused on the design and evaluation of public policies in Chile, South Africa, and Spain.

In the field of teaching, she delivers courses in Sociology, Social Theory, Social Structure in Latin America, and Research Methodology in the Social Sciences.
