The Faculty of Philology and Communication of the University of Barcelona will be the headquarters of the Phonetics Museum Scientific Instruments Collection of the Eugenio Martínez Celdrán Phonetics Laboratory. It is the first university phonetics museum in Spain. The inauguration will be on Monday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m., on the fifth floor of the Josep Carner building, and will be open to the general public. The vice Chancellor of Culture, Memory and Heritage, Agustí Alcoberro, the dean of the Faculty of Philology and Communication, Javier Velaza, the director of the laboratory, Lourdes Romera, and the founder and first director of the laboratory, Eugenio Martínez Celdrán, will participate.

With the proposal titled A Historical Look at Phonetics, the laboratory wants to publicize its collection and make it available to all audiences. During the last months, a task of museumization of the inventory of devices and instruments has been carried out, together with the Vice-Rectorate for Culture, Memory and Heritage. The exhibition offers a journey through the technological changes that the study of phonetics has experienced over the last few years, from the first analog machines to the most recent digital devices, as well as the impact of personal computers with acoustic analysis programs versatile and available to everyone. Among the more than fifty devices and instruments that are part of the collection are analog spectrographs, digital spectrographs, oscilloscopes, electropalatographic analysis equipment, tape recorders, and other devices related to the discipline of phonetics.

The exhibition space is on the fifth floor of the Josep Carner building of the Faculty of Philology and Communication. Founded in 1978, the Eugenio Martínez Celdrán Phonetics Laboratory is the oldest university phonetics laboratory in the state, and quite a benchmark in Europe.
