The University of Mons launches the Carme Junyent Chair on Catalan Language and Society.
The chair aims to deepen the relationship between language and society from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective, faithful to the legacy of Professor Carme Junyent.
The University of Mons in Wallonia has established the Carme Junyent Chair, a new academic space dedicated to the study of the Catalan language and its interactions with society. The project seeks to contribute to the knowledge and promotion of the Catalan language in an international context and to foster research in Catalan sociolinguistics, as well as the organization of seminars and academic events on a global scale. It will also promote initiatives for postgraduate and doctoral students, with the goal of creating a European-wide knowledge exchange network.
This academic proposal emphasizes the importance of sociolinguistics in the current linguistic context of the Occitan-Catalan region, reiterates the University of Mons’ commitment to the study of minoritized languages, and highlights the figure of Carme Junyent, one of the leading figures in Catalan sociolinguistics.
