Imatge d'una estudiant

In Spain, university degrees have now been divided into the three cycles, each leading to the corresponding degree:

- first-cycle studies: bachelor's degree

- second-cycle studies: master's degree

-third-cycle studies: doctoral degree

The university master’s degrees have a study load of between a minimum of 60 ECTS credits and a maximum of 120 ECTS credits, which is equivalent to either one or two academic years. A full time academic year is equivalent to 60 ECTS credits, while one ECTS credit is equivalent to 25 hours of work load.

Where it is deemed necessary by the Coordinating Committee for the master’s degree and depending of the candidate's previous training, they may have to complete bridging courses up to a maximum of 30 ECTS credits.

Master's degree curricula provide theoretical and practical training for the student through:

- compulsory subject areas

- optional subject areas

- seminars, external placements and supervised work

- writing and public defence of the final project

In each master's degree course website you can find the available specializations and pathways, the curriculum and specific subjects with their credit load, possible placements and the credits corresponding to the final project.

Once the master's degree programme is completed, students can access doctoral studies, provided their meet the access requirements and the admission criteria for a specific programme. Doctoral programmes encompass a series of activities designed to help students acquire the research skills and competences needed to complete and defend a thesis and receive a PhD degree.
