What are university master's degrees?

Imatge d’estudiants a l’Edifici Històric

These are courses offering advanced training in a specialist area of professional or cross-disciplinary practice; alternatively, they provide students with the official research training required for doctoral programmes. They are official degrees and the fees are government-regulated and have been tailored to comply with the requisites outlined by the European Higher Education Area.
They have a work load equivalent to European degrees, between 60 and 120 ECTS credits, equivalent to one or two academic years full time, with the objective of encouraging and facilitating mobility and the integration of students into the European labour market.

University master's degrees

Each academic year, the UB offers a total of 150 university master’s degree courses, in the different knowledge areas. University master’s degree courses are divided into three categories:

- Managed by the UB alone.

- Inter-university: coordinated by the UB and other Spanish universities. This is a joint programme between two or more universities with a single course syllabus. Each of the participant universities teaches a specific number of subjects. Mobility requirements differ for each master's degree and should be checked.

- Erasmus Mundus: courses taught by a consortium of at least three universities of different countries, at least one of them European. To complete these programmes, students will need to spend a study period in at least two of the three universities. These master's degrees have been granted the Erasmus Mundus seal of quality by the European Commission. Students are given a double or joint degree certificate, recognized in the countries of origin of the universities involved.

On the other hand, there are master's degree programmes that qualify graduates to work in regulated professions. These master's degrees may have specific requirements in terms of access and have a fixed cost for all students in the Catalan university system.

The master's degree course offerings for the following academic year is published during the second half of January on the UB website.
