The International Seminar on the State of Higher Education in the Euro-Mediterranean Area was officially opened on 17 January in the Aula Magna of the University of Barcelonaʼs Historic Building. The occasion also marked the launch of the Joint Innovation & Synergies in Education (JISER-MED) project, an ambitious initiative headed by the University of Barcelona that aims to build bridges between Europe and neighbouring states in the fields of higher education and research.

The presidential table was formed by the UB Rector, Dr. Dídac Ramírez; the Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Roser Clavell; and the Vice-Rector for International Relations and Deputy Rector of the UB, Dr. Carles Carreras.

The JISER-MED project, funded by the European Commission as part of the ERASMUS Mundus Action 3 programme for the promotion of the European higher education system, brings together universities and higher education institutions from France, Italy, Morocco, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Spain. A range of other institutions are also involved in the project, most notably the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed).

The Seminar, organized by the University of Barcelona with the support of the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) and the Euromed Permanent University Forum (EPUF), based at Rovira i Virgili University (URV), is designed first and foremost as a forum for discussion between the institutions involved in the JISER-MED project, where they can discuss common policies and current education and research projects being carried out in countries across the Mediterranean region.

The Rector of the UB was joined at the event by Dr. Zulima Fernández, Director of ANECA; Senén Florensa, Director General of the IEMed; Manel Camós, EC Representative in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands; Dr. Enric Olivé, Executive Secretary of the EPUF; representatives of institutions involved in JISER-MED; and other national and international experts.
