The UB will lead a consortium of ten EU universities and eight Russian universities under the European Unionʼs Erasmus-Mundus programme with the aim of forging and strengthening academic links between Russian higher education institutions and their counterparts in the European Higher Education Area. The first meeting of the ERANET-MUNDUS (Euro-Russian Academic Network-MUNDUS) consortium - the first consortium of its type organized by the UB - will be held on 14-15 November at the Faculty of Biology.

The European partners in the ERANET-MUNDUS consortium (which falls under the framework of Barcelona Knowledge Campus activities), in addition to the UB, are the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Radboud University Nijmegen, the University of Poitiers, the University of Duisburg-Essen, Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, the University of Glasgow, the University of Siena, the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. Most of these institutions, including the UB, are members of the International Research Universities Network (IRUN), giving them experience of collaborative work in research programmes, joint degrees, conferences and symposia, summer courses and other activities. The Russian partner universities are the Russian State Hydrometeorological University, the Siberian Federal University, Pskov State Pedagogical University, the South Ural State University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Demidov Yaroslavl State University, Saint Petersburg University and the Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod. The network also includes the following associates: the Spanish Higher Institute of the Environment, the Friends of the Baltic, the Committee for Nature Preservation of the Russian Geographical Society, the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency and the Russian National Accreditation Agency. At the UB, ERANET-MUNDUS activities are overseen by the International Mobility and Programs Office and the academic coordinator Marc Ruiz-Zorilla.

ERANET-MUNDUS - promoted during the visit to Russia by a delegation from the UB as part of the celebrations of the Spain-Russia “dual year” of economic and cultural interaction - aims to establish mobility flows between European and Russian universities for students at all levels of higher education and for teaching and research staff. The initiative is an opportunity for Russian universities to learn more about the work of their European counterparts and to harness this knowledge to move forward with their own objectives. Russian higher education is in a transitional period which will see it introduce a degree structure more closely in line with the Bologna model, Russia having been one of the signatories to the Bologna Declaration in 2003. ERANET-MUNDUS will establish a stable framework for student and staff mobility, create a platform for future collaborations, and contribute to meeting Russian and European training requirements in the education sector. The project also aims to strengthen and extend international cooperation in areas including civil rights, citizenship and sustainability, through joint initiatives with NGOs and other organizations, and to promote awareness of the importance of linguistic and cultural diversity. ERANET-MUNDUS will also contribute to the training of new generations of teachers for different educational levels, as a response to the ageing of the workforce in the Russian education sector.

Erasmus Mundus is a European Union programme designed to enhance the quality of European higher education and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with third countries. The programme is also designed to contribute to the development of human capital and to increase the scope for international cooperation between higher education institutions through new mobility opportunities with non-EU countries. The ERANET-MUNDUS project forms part of the Action 2 section of the Erasmus Mundus programme, which focuses on partnerships between European and third-country higher education institutions including scholarships and fellowships for mobility at all academic levels. This is the first time that the UB has coordinated one of the 42 Action 2 Strand 1 Erasmus Mundus projects approved by the EU. Alongside these projects are a series of programmes grouped in Action 1, which focuses on quality at masters and doctoral levels including scholarships/fellowships to participate in these programmes, and Action 3, for the promotion of European higher education through projects to enhance the attractiveness of Europe as an educational destination and a centre of excellence at world level.
