With the aim of enhancing the quality of the PhD and the training of researchers, boosting the relationship among knowledge fields, promoting knowledge transfer and encouraging the incorporation of Doctors in the productive sector, the Governing Board of the University of Barcelona unanimously approved on Friday 16th of March the required documents in order to create and put in motion the PhD School of the UB. It is a new structure which will be in charge of coordinating and administering all the PhD programmes of the UB.

The UB currently offers seventy-one PhD programmes adapted to the European Higher Education Area, one of the largest and most diversified offers in the State and the broadest in Catalonia, which covers Human Sciences, Law Science, Economic Sciences, Mathematics, Health Sciences and Educational Sciences.

On the 16th of December 2011, the Governing Board approved the set in motion of the process to create the PhD School. The Rector, Dídac Ramírez, entrusted to Enric Canela, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the UB, with the organization of the new PhD School and appointed him as director of the new entity.

Now, the approval by the Governing Board enables the beginning of the activity of the new PhD School as well as the creation of a propitious framework in order to reach the established goals. In the following months, a new organizational model will be created, which will help most PhD programmes of the UB to achieve the Excellence Award. Currently, thirty-one programmes have this distinction, which is awarded by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport.

With the PhD, the training researchers of the UB have a high-quality scientific and researching training thanks to the fact that this University is the first one in the State in high-impact scientific productivity. These researchers must also acquire a good competence in transversal skills such as an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit, as well as communicative skills, which will enable them to join not only the university and the research centres but also any other job posts, in which a critical ability and a systematic approach of the problems and of the way to solve them are required.

With the PhD School, the UB wants to incorporate these values, which are not incidental but fundamental in the PhD training, in order to comply with its social mission of training highly-qualified people who help the economical and social progress, as well as the improving of the welfare state of the country.
