El fons marí de les illes Medes i el Montgrí: quatre dècades de recerca per a la conservació is the title of the new volume of the collection Recerca i Territori, edited by the experts Bernat Hereu, from the Department of Ecology at the UB, and Xavier Quintana, director of the Professorship in Mediterranean Coastal Ecosystems. The book, published by the Professorship together with the Mediterranean Museum, will be presented on Friday 14th December, within the 2nd Congress on Research and Territory, which will take place in the Mediterranean Museum, in Torroella de Montgrí.

The new publication was coordinated by the experts Àlex Lorente, Marc Marí, Antoni Roviras and Maria Pilar Carabús, and revised by Joandomènec Ros, professor at the Department of Ecology of the UB, and by Josep M. Gili, deputy director of the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC). The monograph, which aims at going more deeply into the knowledge of natural areas and providing data to improve their management, collects the main conclusions of the scientific research developed for several decades on the seabed of Medes Islands and Montgrí coastal area in different fields of ecology and marine biology. Some experts from the Department of Ecology of the UB, the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC), the ICM-CSIC, the Balearic Oceanography Centre (COB-IEO), and the tourism section of the town council of Torroella de Montgrí and LʼEstartit collaborated.

The main goal of the 2nd Congress on Research and Territory, which will bring together a great number of speakers and experts on Medes Islands and several protected areas, is to deal with some topics related to the management and research developed in the Montgrí mountain, the area of Baix Ter and Medes Islands. At the same time, the congress wants to be a tool to manage Catalan natural areas. This year, the congress will be focus on the adaptive management of natural areas, taking into account the scientific research carried out during forty years on the seabed of Medes Islands and Montgrí coastal area.
