Josep Samitier was appointed as the new Director of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) during the Board of Trustees meeting which took place on Monday 6th April. Out of a total of nine candidates who compete for the position, three were selected to be considered by the Board.

After his designation, Samitier affirmed that he will maintain “a continuity of IBECʼs main objectives”. He added: “I will review and renew our direction to include new ideas and face present challenges. This will require the strong cooperation of the whole IBECʼs community”.

Josep Samitier, professor of Electronics at the Faculty of Physics of the UB and co-director of IBEC, is also the executive director of the campus of International excellence HUBc, which gathers thirty public and private organizations from Barcelonaʼs metropolitan area which work on health issues.

He has devoted his career to research, teaching and university management. In research, he is expert on nanotechnology applied to biomedicine. On this topic, he has published more than three-hundred papers on International journals, led twenty-two doctoral theses and co-developed four patents. He has fostered the development of nanotechnologies applied to medicine, and he set up the Nanotechnology Platform of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). He coordinates the Spanish Nanomedicine Platform. He is also the Spanish representative of several International committees of nanotechnology applied to health issues.

Professor Samitier is coordinating now the UB and UPC masterʼs degree in Biomedical Engineering, and he gives lessons in several EHEA bachelor's and masterʼs degrees. Moreover, he was the promoter of the new EHEA bachelorʼs degree in Biomedical Engineering of the UB, and he has participated in several commissions to evaluate university quality.

On the field of university management, he was the Head of the Department of Electronics, Vice-Rector for International Policy, Vice-Rector of Innovation and acting Rector of the UB, as well as deputy director of the PCB. Samitier received the City of Barcelona Award for technological innovation in 2003.
