Professor Joandomènec Ros, from the Department of Ecology of the UB, has been appointed President of the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) for the next four years. In the plenary session that took place yesterday, 10th June, he received 153 votes for, 23 blank votes and 2 spoiled votes.

The turnout was 81 %. Ros was the only candidate who competed for the Presidency of IEC; he will replace Salvador Giner, who has been the President of IEC since 2005. The new President will take up the post on 1st September.

Joandomènec Ros, todayʼs acting Vice-President of the Institute, will form government together with Joaquim Agulló and Jaume Puig, as vice-presidents, and Romà Escales, as secretary general.

Professor Ros is expert on Biology, Zoology and Ecology, particularly on the study of littoral marine bottoms and their benthic biological communities, mainly in the Mediterranean. He is member of the scientific committee of some European research centres and nature reserves. He is also a populariser of science and ecology in the mass media, and has published works such as: Objectiu: lʼAntàrtida. Diari de bord dʼuna campanya oceanogràfica (Empúries, 1999), La natura marradeja (Rubes Ed., 2001), Vora el mar broix. Problemàtica ambiental del litoral mediterrani (Empúries, 2001) and Lʼaltra meitat del medi ambient (Almuzara, 2007), among many others.
