On 20 June, the Official Bulletin of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC) published the order of the Department of Economy and Competitiveness that approved the creation of the Doctoral School of the University of Barcelona.

The school coordinates and organises all the doctoral programmes of the UB. Its main objectives are to improve doctoral programmes' quality and the professional preparation of doctoral students, to favour the relationship among different subject areas, to promote knowledge transfer, and to to achieve that companies incorporate doctors in their staff.

The UB, which has now 5,000 pre-doctoral researchers, offers 71 doctoral programmes adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). This is one of the most extensive and diverse offerings in Spain and top one in Catalonia. UB doctoral programmes are centred on the following subject areas: Humanities, Law, Economics, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, Health Sciences and Education Sciences.

On 16 December 2011, the Governing Council of the UB approved the set-up of the process to create the Doctoral School. Then, the Rector, Dr Dídac Ramírez, commissioned Dr Enric Canela, current Vice-Rector of Science Policy, to organise the new Doctoral School and appointed him director of the School. Some months later, in the meeting that took place on 16 March 2012, the Governing Council approved by unanimous decision the documentation needed to create and set up the Doctoral School of the UB.

Now, the approval of the Government of Catalonia allows standardising the situation of the Doctoral School. In the following months, the school is going to consolidate its new organization model that will achieve an excellence distinction for nearly all UB doctorate programmes. Currently, 31 programmes are honoured with this distinction conferred by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
