Global problems such as hunger, soldier children or torture are some of the current issues to be analyse on the new edition of the Season of Talks for the Master's Degree in International Studies of the University of Barcelona, which commemorates its 25th anniversary. This year, representatives of international institutions like Miladin Bogetic, officer at the United Nations Office at Geneva, as well as other prestigious experts like the Argentinian writer, historian and journalist Martín Caparrós participate in the season of talks.

Global problems such as hunger, soldier children or torture are some of the current issues to be analyse on the new edition of the Season of Talks for the Master's Degree in International Studies of the University of Barcelona, which commemorates its 25th anniversary. This year, representatives of international institutions like Miladin Bogetic, officer at the United Nations Office at Geneva, as well as other prestigious experts like the Argentinian writer, historian and journalist Martín Caparrós participate in the season of talks.

The masterʼs degree in International Studies is a postgraduate course offered by the Department of International Law and Economics. Since its creation, in the academic year 1989-1990, the masterʼs degree has received six hundred students from forty-six countries. The season of talks about current issues in a globalized world complement masterʼs lessons. Lectures are opened to the general public, but registration is required.

 

April & May lectures

Soldier children and the international response to this problem is the issue that focuses the next talk, which takes place on Monday 20 April, at 6.30 p.m., in the Salo de Graus at the Faculty of Law. Miladin Bogetic, expert at the United Nations Office at Geneva, pronounces the lecture “Child soldiers and the international response”.

On Wednesday 22 April, the Salo de Graus of the Faculty of Law hosts the lecture pronounced by Martín Caparrós who describes his personal experiences when he developed the research work he needed to elaborate his latest book, El hambre. For four years, the Argentinian journalist travelled around India, Bangladesh, Niger, Kenya, Sudan, Madagascar, Argentina, the United States and Spain to document malnutrition in the 21st century. The book is the result of his research activity.

On 11 May, at 6 p.m., the Salo de Graus of the Faculty hosts the commemoration of MEIʼs 25th anniversary. The event includes a lecture pronounced by Fernando Mariño, member of the Committee Against Torture (CAT) and professor of International Public Law from the Carlos III University of Madrid.

On Friday 15 May, a conference pronounced by Remo Lalli, secretary of the High Level Committee on Management and director of the Chief Executive Board for Coordination of the United Nations, closes the season of talks. His lecture, entitled “Integrating the UN system's operations for improved programmatic delivery in the field: the delivering as one programme”, takes place in the room Font i Rius at the Faculty of Law, at 6.30 p.m.
