The teaching staff room of Faculty of Philology was not large enough to host all the people who attended the round-table talk entitled “¿Qué està ocurriendo en el Próximo Oriente?”. Dolors Bramon and Francisco del Río, professors in the Department of Semitic Languages, Xavier Pons, professor in the Department of International Law of the UB, and Jordi Llaonart, journalist and expert on the Arab world, participated in the discussion, moderated by Mònica Rius Piniés, co-director of the master’s degree in the Arab World and Islam.
The main objective of the debate was to provide some key information in order to understand better the Islamic State. Conversation revolved around questions such as: How Islamic is the Islamic State? Does it have political and religious legitimacy? When and why did it appear? Key concepts like caliphate, ummah and takfiri and the reasons why it attracts so many European young people were analysed in deep.
