This is the fourth year in a row that the University of Barcelona joins the campaign “Recicla Cultura”, an initiative by Fundació Servei Solidari, promoting book donations so that other people can buy them for a symbolic price on Saint Georgeʼs day. The collected money will be used to fund literacy and language courses, an activity this entity has conducted for more than ten years. These courses favour social integration for the newcomers in Catalonia. Last year the University collected 455 books for this campaign, and 1400 euros were collected.

In Catalonia, around the 25% of foreign people do not use Catalan or Spanish as their common language. A linguistic reception is the first step for social inclusion. In order to raise awareness on this topic, Servei Solidari works on this campaign, this year with the logo “In Sant Jordi, your book can be part of a story”. All members of the university community can collaborate, until April 17. Books have to be in good state of conservation and can be left at the CRAI libraries of the UB. Textbooks and encyclopaedias cannot be accepted. Children and young adult books as well as the latest books are the best for this activity.

Afterwards, the collected books will be put on sale in the stands the University will set on April 19, 20 and 21 on the occasion of Saint Georgeʼs day: Historical Building (Philology CRAI Library); Philosophy, Geography and History CRAI Library; Bellvitge Campus CRAI Library and Mundet Campus CRAI Library. Books can be obtained with a donation. All the collected money will go to Fundació Servei Solidari to financially support the literacy and language courses. Around 2.000 people at risk of social exclusion benefit from these courses every year.

The campaign “Recicla Cultura” in the University of Barcelona is organized by Voluntariat UB in collaboration with CRAI. If you want to collaborate by volunteering please send an email to voluntariat@ub.edu.
