The rectors of the twenty-three universities that are members of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) took part in the Rectorsʼ Assembly on May 19 and 20, held in the University of Cambridge. This is the first Assembly the rector Joan Elias attends as representative of the UB.

Among the several agenda items was the content of the LERUʼs upcoming publication: recommendations to the European Commission to define the Framework Programme 9 (FP9), which is currently under the definition phase. Other debated topics were the higher education systems in Ireland and Denmark, commented on by the representatives of both universities, which recently joined the LERU, Trinity College Dublin and the University of Copenhagen. Brexit was another commented subject as well as the collaboration of the LERU with 7 Eastern and Central European universities.

Also, LERUʼs final Network Groups were presented. The UB takes part in the nine Policy Groups within the LERU, and in seven out of the eleven current Thematic Groups.

Over the last semester, the LERU has published three position papers: one on interdisciplinarity (December 2016), another on excellent higher education (February 2017) and another on the societal impact of academic research in the knowledge society (March 2017).
