The Faculty of Geography and History of the UB is one of the headquarters of the conference “Puig i Cadafalch. Arquitecte de Catalunya” to be held from the 18th to the 21st of October. This event aims to share unpublished researches on the architect, one of the most important figures of the late 19th Century and early 20th Century Catalonia.

The Faculty of Geography and History of the UB is one of the headquarters of the conference “Puig i Cadafalch. Arquitecte de Catalunya” to be held from the 18th to the 21st of October. This event aims to share unpublished researches on the architect, one of the most important figures of the late 19th Century and early 20th Century Catalonia.

The conference will start on Wednesday 18 at 5 p.m. at the Institute for Catalan Studies, where the first sessions will take place. The second day, the meeting will take place at the Faculty of Geography and History, holding the sessions “Constructor de ciutats. De Mataró a la capitalitat barcelonina” and “Els llenguatges arquitectònics entre el Modernisme i el Noucentisme. Lʼarquitecte i els seus col·laboradors”. Afterwards there will be a roundtable on the restoration of Puig i Cadafalch buildings. The last day the conference will take place in Can Palauet, in Mataró, where it will also hold the closing ceremony.

The University of Barcelona is one of the collaborating entities in the Year of Puig i Cadafalch, commissioned by Mireia Freixa, professor of History of Art at the UB, together with the archaeologist and historian Eduard Riu Barrera. The aim is to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of this eminent architect and the centenary of his presidency at the Commonwealth of Catalonia. Josep Puig i Cadafalch is one of the distinguished figures at the turn of the 19th century in Catalonia. Architect, urban planner, art restorer (monuments), archaeologist, art historian with international projection, apart from politician, his legacy covers several fields: from his buildings in Barcelona and Maresme, to restorations such as the Seu dʼÈgara. He is also known for his encouragement in archaeological excavations in Empuries and internationally prestigious studies in history of art, as well as his teaching task in Barcelona, Paris and Harvard, among others. As politician, he was president of the Commonwealth of Catalonia between 1917 and 1923 and promoted many reforms in cultural infrastructures and administration management of this institution. He was invested Honorary Doctorate by the University of Barcelona in 1934, sponsored by Pere Bosch i Gimpera.
