The UB welcomes twenty-six students coming from conflict areas this year
Three new Syrian students have joined the Support Program of the University of Barcelona for refugees and people from conflict areas. These three students are part of an group of eighteen people the universities will welcome this year as part of a project from the Secretary for Migration, Equality and Citizenship of Generalitat de Catalunya. These three students, who will study the first year of master and bachelor degrees on Design, International Law and English Studies, join the twenty-three students the UB welcomed in its rooms via its specific program, which was launched in 2015, with the support of the Barcelona City Council. Therefore there are twenty-six students coming from conflict areas who are studying at the UB this year. They are sixteen men and ten women, aged 26, coming from Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The UB program revolves around a central element: the transition course in bachelor and training courses on human rights, a university extension activity which, with an important language (Catalan and Spanish) learning element, allows students from conflict areas, where human rights are violated, to continue with their studies, at the university and in training courses as a previous step to access university studies.
Regarding the involved faculties, there are students coursing bachelor and master degrees in the faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science, Medicine and Health Sciences, Economics and Business, Law, Education, and Pharmacy and Food Sciences. The students who take part in this program are mainly accommodated in UB residential colleges, but also with families, through the program “Acull” from the entity Punt de Referència, and in funded apartments by city councils such as lʼHospitalet de Llobregat and Viladecans, and the Provincial Council of Barcelona.
The Support Program of the UB for refugees and people from conflict areas was launched prioritizing groups of youngsters identified as vulnerable, such as the ones who are called to take part in the war and young girls who are the particular target of armed groups. The program, coordinated by Solidaritat UB Foundation, includes extra-academic support aspects such as specialized juridical assistance, psychological care, and employment support.
