On October 17, the Staff Room (Sala de Professors) in Josep Carner Building in the Faculty of Philology, was full of lecturers, students, and friends of Albert Bastardas i Boada, to pay homage to the distinguished sociolinguist on the occasion of his retirement.

On October 17, the Staff Room (Sala de Professors) in Josep Carner Building in the Faculty of Philology, was full of lecturers, students, and friends of Albert Bastardas i Boada, to pay homage to the distinguished sociolinguist on the occasion of his retirement.

The event went through the life and the academic career of doctor Albert Bastardas i Boada with the interventions by Javier Velaza, dean of the Faculty of Philology; Xavier Vila, director of the Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics and the Center for Sociolinguistics and Communication Research; Emili Boix-Fuster and Maria Àngels Massip Bonet, lecturers at the Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics; and Jaume Rafecas, representing his friends from Vilafranca del Penedès.

Albert Bastardas Boada (Vilafranca del Penedès, 1851) is a Catalan sociolinguist, professor of Sociolinguistics and Language Ecology and Policy at the Department of General Linguistics of the University of Barcelona. He studied Catalan Philology at the UB and the UAB and holds a doctorate with a thesis on language and immigration in Catalonia from Université Laval (Quebec, Canada). In 1984 and 1985 (honourable mention) he received the Sant Ramon de Penyafort prize, in 1992 he obtained the award to human sciences research by the Enciclopèdia Catalana Foundation, and in 2004 he received the award Idees Assaig Breu from the Center for Contemporary Studies. He has been director of the University Center for Sociolinguistics and Communication (CUSC-UB) since its foundation in 1998, and until 2010. He is now the director of the Complexity, Communication and Sociolinguistics Group, distinguished by the Generalitat de Catalunya. He has been principal investigator in several public research projects on sociolinguistic aspects of the Catalan language, and ICREA-Academia researcher between 2011 and 2015.
